They can grow in the shade of a tree canopy where grass can't grow, and their spreading habit can quickly fill in the area.
Hostas can be divided every three to five years in the early spring, when their green shoots are just beginning to emerge. Each year more shoots come up, and if not divided, the shoots in the center die out and the newer, outer shoots keep growing. The plants can be easily divided by using a sharp knife to slice through the root ball, separating each crown of shoots. Clean and disinfect your knife before cutting to prevent the spread of pathogens by following the instructions provided by University of Florida IFAS Gardening Solutions.
These hosta crowns will fill out quickly when replanted. See my guide to growing hostas under pine trees for more information on how to grow hostas successfully when they have to compete with other plants for fertility.
Overcrowded hostas can also create an environment that is more favourable for slugs, snails and fungal disease due to creating their own micro climate of higher levels of humidity from transpiring leaves. Another important consideration when spacing hostas is whether you have left sufficient space around each plant to distribute mulch in the spring.
Adding mulch in early spring is important to help retain soil moisture, add nutrients and improve the soil structure so that hostas crucially do not dry out in the upcoming spring and summer weather. A 2 inch layer of mulch ideally compost, leaf mould or manure around hostas will help keep each plant as healthy as possible, just make sure that you leave about a 6 inch radius of soil between the mulch and the crown of the hosta as the crown does not like to be covered by mulch.
The reason orchid flowers and flower buds fall off is because of a sudden change in temperature or humidity. How Much Space Between Hostas To give you an idea of how much space to give each hosta I have created a table with the most popular varieties to indicate roughly how far apart to plant each hosta.
Simply pruning the leaves and stems off the top of the plant will not stop the underground roots from spreading. Shake or rinse the soil off of the roots or rhizomes. Cut the plant in half or thirds with a sharp knife or trowel. Discard the excess, or save it to plant in a new location. Replace the now-smaller hosta in its original hole, and backfill with the removed soil.
