Can i nail hardie board

Also I heard you should caulk each board. Please help! We want to put your cement fiber siding right on top of the wood siding. Is that ok? I recently addressed issues on a punch list for a building my company built. Much of it included poor exterior caulking and interior drywall damage.

The exterior walls consist of Hardi Plank over exterior sheetrock on metal studs. The siding is screwed and I noticed sagging and waving. It seems odd that the siding is over drywall as there seems to be too much margin for play as drywall does not support sheer very well. Is this a good method or will I be constantly sent back to fix? I bought a trailer and now im building a roof and taking the trailer in.

Want to keep squirrels from chewing their way into your home through the fiberboard or wood siding? Use the hardiplank ONCE to replace any damage from squirrels! For blind nailing is it absolutely necessary to use roofing nails, requiring purchase of a roofing nailer? If we can use a regular nailer, what type of nails should we buy? All existing boards have been blind nailed.

How can I remove the damaged boards without ruining the other siding that does not need to be replaced? Once the damaged boards are removed, how do I replace them with new ones, blind nailing them into place? Hariplank is not squirrel impervious. The squirrels have also gnawed the plastic knobs on the gas grill. The Azek trim too has been molested with gnawing just off the deck. The house is in Fairfax Station, VA.

I have a contractor who installed the cement fibre board, fiscia and trim boards with cut up lap siding. The corner trim boards are on top of the lap siding. I think he caulked over the butt seams of the lap siding. I also asked that the Brand Hardie be used and he did not. Do I have a case in getting it replaced or installed correctly?

We had cement board siding and skirting put on our brand new manufactured home in the San Diego area of CA. It is painted. I want to put a planting bed in front of the home for low water succulents. Since the home sits up so high, I want to make the bed a raised bed using a small rock wall to hold the soil. Can I mound the soil up against the cement board inches high?

There will not be a lot of moisture because the plants are low water succulents, but it will impede air flo to the cement board. If that is ill-advised, how can I achieve the desired effect? Can I layer plastic moisture barrier then cement board like in a shower or some other product?

Thanks, Patty. This is a very useful article. Before I try to do this myself, I wanted to ask if this is easier or harder than installing vinyl siding. Sophia Liam. The vinyl will fade, if it is anything but white and get brittle and get waves in it. That is why I have went to cement lap siding. But this is my experience with vinyland the research on Hardie siding I have done. Look at the Hardie site. What a warranty! I Hope this helps with your decision.

Is it necessary to cover over nails prior to painting or can I just paint over them? We are looking to replace the back side with lap siding. I have a 70s home clad with corrugated fibre board containing asbestos? It is still in good condition however I want to clad over it with board and batten purely for aesthetics.

Can I nail gun straight thru the board and the cement board into the stud? Or will it shatter? Thanks for any input. We have purchased a new house and the outside exterior is covered with Hardi board. The house is only 7 months old and has just seen only this past summer as far as heat is concerned. Now there is a brown sticky liquid type material leaching out from under the Hardi board in different locations of the ouside of the house.

It leaves quite a stain. What would cause this,we live in Toronto Ontario area of Canada. Thanks for the great tips and for the very helpful step-by-step instructions! We decided to go with Hardie Plank and we are very happy with our decision. We were also looking for suggestions on how to properly wash our siding and what cleaning products to use — these are all wonderful ideas. Should we have a drip edge? What caulking will adhere to the cement board and the black house wrap and cement porch landing that the post is on?

It will be in direct sunlight. Any concerns with this or with rain or hosing down the posts for cleaning. Please any help will be greatly needed. Would it be best to call a professional installer? I have to reley on others for help for I am widowed. We have hardiplank siding up. We use to have wooden siding.

We live in Texas and sometimes we get hurricanes. We need to put up plywood over the windows. How can we put the plywood up temp. Great site , thanks! It will go over and older barn, built with large poles, 8 feet apart.

What would be the best way to install the hardy sheets over this? I am thinking of nailing it straight to the plywood and the poles. I am curious about the shear strength of Hardie Panel. The FCS blade is horrendous. I actually used one of those guillotine cutters and I highly recommend those. A tip would be, be very carful when nailing in corner pieces.

I have a 15 year old house with cement board siding. Problem is, I need to replace 7 or 8 of them that have been damaged. Any idea where these could be found?

I want to replace the existing siding with cement board siding. I plan to remove the metal siding to prevent moisture build-up. Q1 Is it permissible to cover the 2X2 framing with rigid foam prior to installing the cement board? Q2 If the foam is OK, does it also need to be wrapped prior to siding? Q3 Can screws be utilized for attachment to prevent inside drywall damage caused by hammering?

Q4 Will the siding provide the structural integrity needed. Thanks for the input! My wife and I are trying to plan some projects for our home that we want to get done this summer. We were wanting some new siding, so I definitely appreciated this post. Thanks for sharing! Thanks for the clear instructions. While HardiePlank siding offers durability, it easily breaks; therefore, drilling through it requires proper tools and techniques.

These screws have a coating to resist corrosion, a special wide head with cutting flutes and hi-low threads for a strong grip. If you can't find them at a home center, call tile specialty stores. Hardie plank is a type of lap siding that contains cement fibers, making it extremely durable. It can be cut and drilled like wood, but you 'll need to use a masonry bit to drill this tough board.

Lightweight items, such as a soilless hanging basket weighing less than one pound, can be attached anywhere on the siding. Hardie no longer recommends the caulking of any joint in their lap siding colorplus or primed. Deterioration of the caulking in the joint has become a maintenance issue for home owners over time. Joint flashing is recommended for all hardie lap siding now.

Put on safety goggles whenever drilling, sawing or nailing cement fiber siding. Wear a dust mask or respirator. Drill a small hole using an electric drill and drill bit. Drill larger holes with a circular attachment on the drill or use a RotoZip tool. Fiber cement siding can be nailed by hand or with a pneumatic nailer. It can also be attached using corrosion resistant screws.

Use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel nails. Plan on using full sticks of trim wherever you can then and count pieces. Using two pieces of trim on one side of a window or door is as unsightly as having excess but joints on a section of wall that could have had all full length pieces.

You will almost alway come up with slightly higher material counts like this but in most cases extra material can be returned and your job will look much better installed with clean, full pieces of siding and trim rather than pieced together. If you are completing a Hardie installation on new construction project you can easily measure off the new block or concrete foundation to find a level line and starting place.

But if you are doing a re-side of an existing house or building check how well the existing siding matches up on the corners all the way around the structure before you start taking it down. If the existing siding was hung correctly and matches up, you can use certain pieces to get quick level lines on the wall that you already know are right.

You can use the first piece of the existing siding to get a level line for your new starter course. Putting on the first two or three courses of Hardie siding all the way around the home before you lay up an entire wall is never a bad idea, neither is making reference lines after several course high just to make sure corners come out right.

Using a circular saw with a blade made for cutting wood will generate huge clouds of very dangerous dust. The dust contains silica and is terrible to inhale in any amount. Hardie Makes blades for circular saws especially for cutting the fiber cement board that greatly reduce that amount of dust it creates but you will still need safety glasses and a dust mask.

A very simple way to cut Hardie siding is the score and break method. Using a utility knife you can score several times in both directions the line you want to cut.

Once the piece has been scored enough it will bend and break in a clean line.
