I appreciate the clever sharp satirical style here. It's not exactly a parody of The Pilgrim's Progress, but a knock-off that parodies society instead of the work itself. The issues of Hawthorne's day have ballooned since then. Read it; it will give you a better look at the state of today's church and general society then any book written in the s probably will. The knocks on Transcendentalism were curious, however, because at times that seemed to be exactly what he was promoting.
